Growth potential on the labour market is favourable in the region. The Ghent district had well over 7% of job-seekers in July 2008, the city of Ghent almost 11% and the town of Evergem just over 5%. The various governements in the region offer specific training tailored to the demand from the port area.

Escpecially the city of Ghent will enjoy considerable growth over the coming years. Ghent is expected to have 250 000 residents in 2025 (now 230 000)(source: CBSG, Mira-prognosis).

With over 65 000 full-time jobs generated by the total Ghent port, it is covering 15% of the total employement and more than 40% of the industrial employment in East-Flanders.
